Chelsea rallied from two goals down to defeat Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday. Putting them just four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. The Gunners and Chelsea both began the day seven points behind Arne Slot’s team. The Reds’s game this weekend had been postponed owing to weather. Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski put Spurs ahead after 11 minutes, but Jadon Sancho responded with a magnificent strike, and the visitors dominated the second half.
Cole Palmer equalised from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, and Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea the lead 12 minutes later. Palmer’s ice-cold “Panenka” penalty gave the visitors a two-goal lead before Son Heung-min added a late third for Tottenham. Chelsea is presently in second place with 31 points after 15 games, two points ahead of London rivals Arsenal. With a game in hand, Liverpool has 35 points.
The English winger became the first player in Premier League history to score 12 consecutive spot kicks. Cole Palmer also provided the assist for Enzo Fernandez, meaning no player in the Premier League has registered more goal involvements since the start of last season than Palmer’s tally of 50. Chelsea is now the bookmakers’ third favourites to win the Premier League, with odds shorter than Manchester City.
Blues in the Spotlight
Enzo Maresca has gotten his club ahead of where many people expected Chelsea to be this season, as the win at Spurs was their 14th win in their previous 20 Premier League games. Palmer’s influence has been important in encouraging Chelsea to contend for the top. Maresca understands Palmer’s talent and potential better than anyone, having coached him as he rose through the ranks at former club Manchester City.
Maresca said: “Cole belongs to that kind of player, they are not normal players, they are top players. And top players, they do things that normal players or we say ‘How can he do that?’, it’s because he’s Cole. After all, he’s top. We can expect this from Cole. I had Cole for one year four years ago, so I have known him since then. When he was with me in the U23s.”
