Iga Swiatek knows her way around the tennis court. Her ranks and awards show it. Swiatek finished as the year-end No. 1 last year, but this season she won five titles, including a Grand Slam. Swiatek, who lost her top spot to Aryna Sabalenka in October, remains a formidable opponent. Her performance in the Billie Jean King Cup exemplifies this. She helped Poland win the championship.
They never won the championship in its 61-year history. But this year’s team advanced to the semifinals under her supervision. For the third year in a row, Polish topped the tour in championship wins, joining Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams. Iga Swiatek’s 2024 season started with a disastrous third-round exit from the Australian Open. She improved her performance at the Qatar Open.
She was defending her title for the second time. Iga Swiatek won her maiden championship of the year after defeating Elena Rybakina in the WTA 1000 tournament final. The Polish won her second title of 2024 in the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, defeating Maria Sakkari in the final. Swiatek dominated the clay court swing, winning 19 matches. The streak included championships at WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome.
Iga Swiatek dethrones Serena and Graf
Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in both finals and a three-peat at Roland Garros, against Jasmine Paolini. She experienced a downfall following the Paris Olympics, dropping from World No. 1 to World No. 2 by the end of the season. Swiatek won the most titles this year, with five, followed by Aryna Sabalenka, Diana Shnaider, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina with four and three, respectively.
In 2024, Iga Swiatek won the most titles on the WTA Tour for the third year in a row, becoming the fifth woman to do so. She won six championships in 2023 (Qatar Open, Stuttgart Open, Roland Garros, Warsaw Open, China Open, and WTA Finals), and eight in 2022 (Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open, Roland Garros, US Open, and San Diego Open).
