In a world of humor, satire, and jokes are found to be the only source of laughter may not be appropriate to some humanity aspects. It is no old news that sometimes humor collides with controversy when comedians stretch it too far to make their audience laugh. In this case it the YouTube’s latest comedy show ‘The Latent Show’ hosted by Samay Raina that has sparked controversy in this ever-blurring social media world. What might have started as an attempt to reach an audience escalated to a level that is unexpected by many?
In one of the latest episodes of ‘The Latent Show’ where the judges were Samay Raina, Tanmay BhattRaghu Ram, neurologist Dr Sid Warrier, and Balraj Singh Ghai on the judges’ panel. A female contestant named Bunty Banerjee made some unacceptable comments about the newlyborn child of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh Dua. The joke made by Banerjee said, Deepika Padukone also became a mother recently, right? Great, now she knows what depression looks like.” After a brief pause, she added, *”I’m not trying to insult breakup-wala depression… I am.” Right after the clip went the social media the show and the contestant were heavily criticised for her remarks on someone’s motherhood and mental health. What made the audience even more furious was Samay Raina’s and Tanmay Bhatt’s laughing reaction to the joke. The comment immediately drew criticism saying this is very insensitive of people and to Deepika to joke about her mental health and what she has been through. Many condemned that this only highlights the denial of people accepting others who are clinically diagnosed with acute depression. Using someone’s health issue and their motherhood to make your joke humorous isn’t funny. People called out the joke as unfunny and unacceptable.
In response, Deepika Padukone being the gracious woman that she is responded through her social media saying “While I have always supported humor, and believe that humor plays a very important role in society, there is a line that should not be crossed. Humor that is degrading, demeaning, or disrespectful, is not okay, especially when it is targeted at someone’s personal life. As public figures, we should be aware of the impact of our words and actions, and be responsible for how we engage with others.” In response, one might expect Samay Raina to come upfront and make an apology for laughing at the joke but the comedian knows no limit. In one of his Instagram stories, Raina posted a picture of a notification from Reddit which shows some news about the ongoing controversy. Samay added to the story the link to his YouTube channel and asked people to go and outburst in the comment section of his YouTube channel giving him more YouTube views. Being like this at the show can be tolerated at some point but in response being this insensitive and not apologising is complete nuts. Samay Raina should know what boundaries are, if he can’t say something nice he shouldn’t say anything at all.
Comment down if you think Samay should’ve reacted in a generous way and not like this.
