Amidst a power struggle within the Pakistan Hockey Federation, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) is contemplating the suspension of the national body following a challenge to the appointment of its new president.
Khalid Sajjad Khokar, the former president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation since 2015, has contested the selection of Mir Tariq Hussain Bugati as the new president, appointed by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq. Khokar, determined to reverse what he deems an “unconstitutional and illegal decision,” is prepared to take his battle to court, vowing not to relent.
“I wanted to avoid conflict, but now I have to go to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and the FIH,” Khokar declared, hinting at escalating the matter to international sports authorities. The prospect of government interference in the appointment process raises concerns for the FIH, potentially leading to the suspension of the Pakistan Hockey Federation.
The FIH, historically stringent against external influence in the functioning of national federations, may view this development as a breach of autonomy. Khokar’s pursuit of legal action and involvement of international bodies introduces an element of uncertainty into the future of Pakistan’s representation in global hockey.
