Joker: Folie à deux is a direct sequel to the 2019 masterpiece Joker which was an exceptionally well-made thriller about Arthur Fleck who was constantly kicked down by society which turned him into a maniac killer. Unlike the first one though, this film is a musical thriller, made me chuckle when I heard the news for the first time, and is also an extremely boring watch. The film has a runtime of 2hrs 18mins and every passing minute felt like an hour because the film has no story even when it could have!
Although it is quite evident that the idea of the film was quite ambitious and unique but Todd Phillips couldn’t execute that well and that resulted in a shallow and somewhat boring watch. The poor reviews of the film have already started affecting its box office collection which reminds me of DC Universe’s fate because every successful DC film has been a predecessor to a box office failure since a few years now. Although films like- “The Batman” and “Aquaman” have managed to succeed, many other DC films have failed to connect with audiences. The inconsistency in tone and approach across their movies has led to fan disappointment, which seems to be continuing with Joker: Folie à Deux.
With James Gunn and Peter Safran now taking the director’s chair of DC Studios, there is hope that the cinematic universe can course-correct, but the disappointing reception of films like this one suggests that the road ahead may still be rocky for DC fans and filmmakers alike. Superhero genre as a whole is at risk in today’s market and I genuinely hope the new-gen kids get a great superhero just like we did back then!
