Babar Azam Has Stepped Down As Captain More Than Pakistan Won World Cup

Pakistan Cricket Team has been going through huge problems. The Test side was cleanly swept at their home by Bangladesh. Shan Masood has been under huge pressure from the media. Amidst all these, the side’s T20I and ODI captain Babar Azam has stepped down as the captain of the white-ball teams. The star batter informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the team management of his decision in September.

This is not the first time that the 29-year-old batter has stepped down from captaincy. The resignation from the captaincy of the senior national men’s team is his second in less than a year. The 29-year-old resigned as captain of all three formats following Pakistan’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup in India in October-November last year. Babar was reinstated as captain earlier this year.

Following a change in the PCB’s leadership. Shaheen Afridi, who was designated as Babar’s replacement in T20Is, was fired after only one series, earlier this year in New Zealand. However, the team failed to perform in the shortest format in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. They were knocked out of the group stages. There was huge chaos after their group stage exit. Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 that is scheduled in Pakistan. Babar steps down again.

Musical Chair of Pakistan team captain continues

Is this a decision out of frustration or pressure? PCB in recent years has changed its management more times than they have won the World Cup. There has been always chaos and controversy inside the management. The team has been suffering in recent years. After winning the Champions Trophy in 2017 they have failed to win a single trophy. Pakistan has not played an ODI since their World Cup defeat in India in November 2023, and they haven’t played a T20I since the World Cup in June.

The Musical Chair of the captaincy rotation still goes on and finds the best results for the Men in Green, the management needs to provide time and bring in fresh players and work on their domestic circuit for the betterment of the cricket and the players. Since 1992 the team has not won an ODI World Cup. Every time they fail the management keeps on changing the captain.

Who do you think will be replacing Babar Azam in the white-ball captaincy? Do let us know in the comments that who do you want to see as the next skipper for Pakistan.
