New IPL Retention Rules Will Kill The Competitive Balance

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will be much more exciting and scintillating. There will be a mega auction that will be taking place ahead of the competition. The 10 teams will again be involved in the bidding war. To get their favourite players in the franchise and win the silverware at the end of the season. The IPL Governing Body has announced the new rules on Saturday night.

The new rules will benefit some of the franchises and some will not benefit from this. However, it completely depends on the franchise management how and whom they want to retain ahead of the auction. Franchises can retain six players, and the right-to-match (RTM) option is back at the auction. Along with that, the Impact Player rule will remain in place for IPL 2025. The budget has also increased from INR 100 crore to INR 120 crore.

The previous edition of the auction saw some big buying. Mitchell Starc became the most expensive cricketer in IPL history with INR 24.75 crore. Along with him another Australian Pat Cummins also got a value of INR 20.50 crore. Both the cricketers played the tournament fully and were important to their respective sides. The franchises that did not have the best teams last season might suffer in the auction with six retentions in place.

Retention slabs

In case a franchise wants to retain five (capped) players, the following amounts will be deducted from the purse:

  • For the first three retentions – INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore
  • For the remaining two – INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore
  • This means a franchise retaining five players before the auction will lose INR 75 crore of the overall purse of INR 120 crore.
  • For the uncapped players, IPL has stuck with the INR 4 crore franchise retaining six players who will lose INR 79 crore from its purse.

Smaller teams have been neglected by IPL

Despite opposition from franchises and worries from high-profile players such as Rohit Sharma that it could hamper the development of allrounders, the IPL has chosen to keep the Impact Player rule in place for the next three seasons, till 2027. The IPL has decided to reinstate it after at least three franchises argued in its favour.

It is understood that the owners of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) desired seven to eight RTMs. Teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Delhi Capitals (DC) will be suffering from these decisions. These sides have only two or three players to retain except that no other players are worth retaining in the team.

“Any overseas player will have to register for the big auction. In case the player does not register then he will have to miss the subsequent small auction. The only exception will be in case of an injury/medical condition which will have to be confirmed by the [player’s] home board before the big auction.” The IPL has also accepted the teams’ proposal of making it necessary for overseas players to register for mega auctions.
