Was Europe’s Laver Cup Win A One Man Show?

The Laver Cup 2024 has finally come to an end. Europe won the championship 13-11. They played the final against Team World. Carlos Alcaraz once again stepped on the big occasion. The Spanish four-time Grand Slam winner overcame Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 in two straight sets to win the championship for the European nation. The 21-year-old broke the U.S. Open runner-up Fritz in the 11th game. Then closed out victory on serve. 

Team World was favourite to win the Laver Cup for the third time in a row, leading 8-4 on points entering the last three days. Captain Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe fought hard on the final day of action, and Alcaraz teamed up with Ruud to defeat Americans Shelton and Frances Tiafoe 6-2 7-6(6) in the early doubles match, taking three points and cutting the score to 8-7.

The Laver Cup is similar to golf’s Ryder Cup, with the first team to 13 points winning the competition. Each of the four Sunday matches was worth three points. Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon this year, was Europe’s only winner out of four sets on Saturday. On Sunday, the 21-year-old Spaniard showed his big-match attitude once more.

Is Alcaraz currently the best Tennis player in the world? The Spaniard has been rocking on the world stage. He has won four Grand Slams in a matter of just two years. Currently ranked as the No.3 Tennis player the young gun has been breathtaking to watch in these recent years. On the weekend he showcased why he has been so highly rated along with his big-match temperament once again.

Alcaraz after the win said, It’s been great. Obviously, we came here as a group, all of us to win the Laver Cup. I’m pretty happy. I think everybody, for us, is. I mean, it’s been a really tough one… we almost lost.” The 21-year-old will be next witnessed in the China Open which is scheduled for the 26th of September. Next year’s Laver Cup takes place in San Francisco.
