In a commendable initiative, Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University has unveiled a plan to support 100 talented but financially constrained athletes. As part of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence and Centenary of Nagpur University, the Management Council has pledged financial assistance of five thousand rupees per month to selected athletes.
The scheme, set to launch in the 2023-24 session, targets athletes facing financial barriers despite their potential. The university will select 50 boys and 50 girls based on their sports performance and financial status, with preference given to those without parents in government or semi-government service.
Financial aid aims to cover special healthy food, sports materials, and up-to-date training. The eligibility criteria involve performance in recognized sports competitions, including inter-collegiate contests and national events.
A noteworthy aspect is the continuation of financial assistance for three years upon receiving a medal or position, with a total duration limited to five years. However, beneficiaries must pass annual exams to remain eligible, discouraging failure in academic pursuits.
The financial assistance fund, deposited directly into athletes’ bank accounts, is intended for fitness training, sports guidance, and nutritional support. The initiative underscores the university’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent and promoting sports excellence.
Some critics argue that financial aid might inadvertently create a dependency on external support, potentially undermining the athletes’ self-sufficiency.
