The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suffered a huge financial loss due to the T20 World Cup 2024 cricket tournament held in America. The group stage games were held in the USA. ICC has formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter and the final decision will be taken in the upcoming annual meeting.
In the ICC meeting held in Colombo, it was discussed that the cost of organizing the T20 World Cup matches in America was more than the budget. The ICC has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter.
The International Cricket Council formed a three-member committee to review the management of the T20 World Cup. The committee includes former New Zealand batsman Roger Twose and two other ICC directors, Lawson Naidu and Imran Khawaja. The ICC is believed to have lost more than US$20 million to host matches in New York, Florida, and Dallas.
According to the ICC, the organization of the ICC T20 World Cup will be reviewed. It will be monitored by three directors, Roger Tooce, Lawson Naidu, and Imran Khawaja, who will submit a report to the board by the end of this year.’
The T20 World Cup matches held in the USA had a budget of approximately US$ 150 million allocated and it has been observed that the budget has increased significantly. It was objected to by some influential board members of the world body. Poor quality of drop-in pitches, ticketing arrangements, and logistical problems added to the ICC’s woes. Concern has also been expressed regarding various tenders.
The committee is also expected to scrutinize the role of some senior officials of the ICC. ICC head of competition Chris Tetley has already resigned. However, the official reason given was that major ICC tournaments (men’s and women’s) held every year were affected.
ICC notices to two cricket associations
According to the ICC, ‘American Cricket and Cricket Chile have been formally issued notices and given 12 months to rectify non-compliance with ICC membership criteria.’
Women’s World Cup includes 16 teams
The Chief Executive Committee (CEC) confirmed the allocation of eight regional qualification spots for the 2026 T20 World Cup. It will qualify two teams each from Africa and Europe, one from the Americas. A total of three teams from the Asia and EAP regional finals.
They also confirmed that the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2030 will consist of 16 teams instead of 12. The cut-off date for Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifiers has also been confirmed which is 31 October 2024. The CEC approved the appointment of Paul Reiffel to the Cricket Committee as a representative of the Elite Panel.
