Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz underrated when it comes to grass court games

Carlos Alcaraz is in the semi-final of yet another Grand Slam. The Spanish player will be facing Daniil Medvedev on Saturday. The reigning Wimbledon champion will look to make it to yet another final and add another Grand Slam to his trophy cabinet. In the quarter-final, he defeated USA’s Tommy Paul by 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 around the roof of No. 1 Court. He started slowly and was broken twice in the first set of 72 minutes by the in-form American.

With just four unforced errors and 92 percent of first-serve points won. He picked up the pace in the fourth set. Alcaraz acknowledged it had been a difficult start to his quarterfinal matchup against the recent champion at Queen’s. He is trying to become just the sixth man to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles consecutively.

There will be a repeat of the 2023 Wimbledon semi-final. As No.2 seeded player will be up against Medvedev. He defeated the Russian player in their previous meeting in the grass court. So far the Spanish have won three grand slams in grass, hard, and clay courts. However, he is underrated coming in the grass court where he has better performance than the other.

Carlos Alcaraz favourite against Medvedev in the semi-final

Alcaraz has won 75% of first-serve points on grass throughout his career. Compared to 69 on clay and 72% on hard surfaces. Additionally, he has significantly improved his break point saving on the surface, going from 61% on clay to 71% on hard. Part of this can be attributed to serves being more successful on the grass in general the percentage of games won with a huge difference.

But this is somewhat offset by Alcaraz’s and it’s balanced out by better-returning numbers for Carlos Alcaraz and most players on clay and hard compared to grass. The match-up will be an interesting one in the knockout game. Medvedev will take revenge for the last semi-final and qualify for the final. In the last 5 meetings, Alcaraz had the upper hand by winning 4 out of the 5 games against the Russian.
