UEFA Euro 2024: Kylian Mbappe’s over-confidence led to France exit

France was knocked out of the UEFA Euro 2024 on Wednesday. They lost to Spain 2-1 in the semi-finals. The Les Blues have struggled to perform in the tournament as they could only score two goals and the rest were own goals that helped them in their victory. Didier Deschamps’s side scored their first goal from open play in the semi-final itself with Randal Kolo Muani breaking the deadlock in the 8th minute of the game.

Kylian Mbappe has failed to score a single goal from open play. The only goal the star forward scored was from the spot kick against Poland. Despite entering as favourites for the tournament they failed to perform as per the expectations. The 25-year-old winger in particular has struggled to make the kind of impact many expected, with the Real Madrid attacker appearing hindered after fracturing his nose in France’s opening match against Austria.

The star Real Madrid footballer came in amazing form in the club season. However, he could not deliver on the biggest stage for his country. There can be various reasons for his poor performance. It can be the overconfidence, ego, or captaincy pressure that might have just created a problem inside the dressing room and his mindset as well.

Mbappe’s poor performance let down France

Kylian Mbappes’s dismal performance was very visible in the Euro 2024. He was not at his very best. Despite the assist for France’s single goal, he never looked threatening down the wing or the middle of the park. The striker had one chance to equalise the scoring but his curler exceeded the bar. In two Euros he has participated in he has failed to create any impact.

In the last edition, he missed a penalty in the shootout against Switzerland, which led his team to be knocked out in the RO16 despite being the favourites in the previous tournament as well. The Les Blues have yet to win the Euro since 2000. Despite scoring first last night they failed to hold on to their lead and conceded two goals within four minutes.
