Phil Foden has flopped at the Euros. The 24-year-old hasn’t registered a single goal or assist so far in the tournament. The eye test for the so-called Stockport Messi has been even more shocking. He looks lost on the field. He’s often seen strutting around the field like a confused pensioner walking back from the grocery. Despite Foden’s catastrophic campaign in the Euros, there hasn’t been a lot of backlash from the media. The reaction from the media clearly shows the double standards of the English media. If Saka or Mainoo dropped performances like these, the tabloids would be up in arms to have them deported back to Nigeria.
Foden Is No Stranger To International Failure
Foden had the season of his life with City. However, a successful club season does not mean a great international career awaits. The country has been pondering for years now, how will Southgate get the best out of Foden. He’s been terrible in various positions as a left winger, right winger, attacking midfielder, and false 9. The media has blamed Southgate for his struggles rather than asking Foden to step up. They’ve been too busy blaming Trent for not dropping a 10/10 performance in every single game rather than Foden ghosting when it matters most. The English media are experts at creating scapegoats to fit their agenda. They’d much rather criticize Bellingham and his supposed ego.
Harrowing Hypocrisy
The media reaction to this situation shows the reality of the English media. They’re always ready to hurl abuses and jeer players of black heritage. Racism is reeking out of this biased criticism. When Sancho, Rashford, and Saka missed penalties at Wembley in the previous Euros, they were accused of letting their country down and racially abused. The media mollycoddled Kane when he missed one at the World Cup. This truly shows the double standards of the media. Foden is a fantastic player however, he too should face criticism. It is not fair to console one side of society while tearing into the other. Win or lose, Phil Foden will be an English Hero. However, Bukayo Saka or Kobbie Mainoo, or Trent Alexander-Arnold are British when they win, and African when they lose.
