Copa America’s Argentina Agenda Is Ruining The Tournament

The Copa America has been a disgrace. One team receiving preferential treatment has destroyed the competion. This type of differential treatment is a blot on the name of the South American FA along with the CONCACAF. The favoritism in the tournament is blatant and not concealed anymore. The Copa America has been held 5 times in the last 10 years, while the Euros have been held only twice. All of this because of one team, and one man in particular couldn’t win it. Argentina and Lionel Messi have destroyed the integrity of the Copa America.

Copa America Clouded With Controversy

Controversy clouded the first match of the Copa America. Canada were given only 10 minutes to enter the field after halftime, while the Albiceleste were permitted an extra 20 minutes in the locker room. Argentina was allowed a clear strategic advantage, and despite Canada’s coach bringing it up, no action was taken. An Argentinian player in the match against Chile grabbed another player’s leg with his hand, but no card was given for some reason. Even Argentina’s fans walked off scot-free after racially abusing Canada’s Moises Bombito. Sofascore rated Lionel Messi of Argentina as the best player of the Copa America, despite his poor performances, shocking many. Darwin Nunez and James Rodriguez, who have outperformed Messi by quite some margin, were entirely snubbed. All this subterfuge just for one man’s legacy.

The Argentina Agenda

The CONMEBOL Football Association should be ashamed of itself. Problems, such as the length of the field and refereeing issues, have plagued this tournament. This bias towards the reigning champions is another blow to the tournament’s integrity. There have been lots of comparisons between The Copa America and The Euros. These arguments are pointless, it’s much more fair to compare the Copa with the Asian Championships or AFCON with how poor the tournament has been overall. This agenda has ruined the quality of the tournament and it’s reputation.
