India’s five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand and world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway are set to face off once again. The match between these two chess legends will take place on May 18 and 19.
Anand and Carlsen have been invited to participate in a chess tournament in Casablanca, Morocco. Joining them in this elite competition are American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and Egyptian grandmaster Bassem Amin.
A Unique Competition: Pravin Thipsay
According to Indian grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, this tournament will be quite unique and different from regular events. In this double round-robin format, each player will compete in six rounds. The organizers will provide the players with specific game positions from Chess Masters matches, which they must continue from. Players will have two minutes before the game to study these positions and then proceed to play. Thipsay describes this as a fascinating experiment aimed at popularizing chess.
15-Minute Games
Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay believes that Anand and Carlsen’s extensive knowledge of various positions will make the games particularly exciting, as players are unlikely to agree on draws. Preparation will be key, especially for Anand. Each game in the tournament will have a duration of 15 minutes.
