The WPL is known to change the lives of several ordinary women with extraordinary talent. And Sajeevan Sajana is the latest case in point. Sajana has become the talk of the town ever since she hit a six to take the Mumbai Indians to victory over the Delhi Capitals in the inaugural game of season 2 of the WPL.
The Sajana Story
Sajana hails from a simple family in Kerala. Her father is an auto driver and her mother is a collector. During the initial stages of her career, Sajana had no money to travel and used to play with a bat made from plastic and coconut branches. She has come a long way since then and has won the Kerala State Women’s Cricketer of the Year Award twice.
She has become a household name since hitting a last-ball six to defeat the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League. In an interview with Yastika Bhatia after the game, Sajana said, “My family background is really simple. At first, I didn’t have money to travel. When I got selected to play for my district, I started getting Rs 150 per day. It was a huge amount for me. Later that figure went up to Rs 150, 300 and 900. I wanted to be happy for my parents.”
Sajana was picked up by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 10 lacs at the WPL auction and she repaid them with her performance against Delhi Capitals in the opening game. Though she has not played for India so far, it’s only a matter of time before that happens.
