India’s fine run at the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament continued as Panghal and Sachin advanced into the semi-finals of the event in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Amit Panghal and National champion Sachin entered the semifinals of the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria on Thursday. Amit (51kg) continued his fine form to grab a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Aldarkhishig Battulga of Mongolia.
Coming into this bout in sublime form, Amit looked lethal. He controlled the bout right from the start giving his opponent little to no chance of making a comeback. Eventually, Amit won the bout 5-0 by unanimous decision and moved into the semi-finals of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Sachin looked equally dominant against Kapanadze Giorgi of Georgia. The southpaw boxer took some time to get going but once he found his feet, he looked like a force to reckon with. Sachin won the first round 4-1 and took the game to his opponent in the second round, effectively using a counter-attacking strategy to land a few left hooks. Though the Georgian tried to hold his own in the third round, Sachin comfortably won the encounter 5-0.
Sachin will now face Ukraine’s Abduraimov Aider in the semifinals on Saturday.
In the 67-kg category, Rajat took the attack to the opposition right from the get-go. Within 37 seconds, Rajat delivered a straight jab, breaking his opponent’s defence and throwing him off-balance, causing the referee to stop the bout and declare him the winner by knockout. He will take on Georgia’s Guruli Lasha in the semifinals on Saturday.
